We conducted all this research because it will help us fill the foundations of the music video. We needed to first get all the different genres that are already existing. We made a individual blogs for Glam Rock, Scopitones, 60s etc this was the start of looking at genres of music and analysed in depth the history of genres in the past. We then looked at the genres such as HipHop,Rap, RnB etc and saw how it was compared to what it is now. We then looked at the the different motifs that are used in music videos in this century. We found out that these music videos had motifs of Horror, Fragmentation of the body, Mystical, Ritual Celebration etc. We then also had to get demographic research of the artist that we decided to use Rihanna. We researched about all the albums she sold, when she sold them, what country loves her the most, what she is ranked and more. This then allows us to really understand our artist and see if she is really worth making a music video for. We made sure that we targeted the right audience by uploading surveys on Facebook because that is where most of the targets audience would be using.
All this research will allow us to then use the information to make the music video worth while, this means that all the research will allow us to make sure that the ideas from our planning will bring an influence to our final product, we also hope that all the research conducted will be targeted to the right target audience; and the genre that we used will also cater to the target audience.
For our music video, we have created a storyboard to show specifically how our important scenes will look like once we made our music video. We hope that our music video will go the same way as the storyboards or similar to it. Here are the storyboards that we have created for this music video.
As a group we decided
to choose Rihanna as our Artist, we have also used her because the song “Fool
in Love” explains how a girl can be foolishly in love that she will do
anything. We decided to start off with the female being seated near the window
in tears with a medium close up; whilst she writes a letter to her parents
about this guy she is so in love with as she writes it is fast motion. The
letter is shown through her shoulders saying “Pap he’s quite a man” and then a
transition to a fade to white and the letter is blurred. The flashback will be
signified with black and white scenes that will start of with her talking to
her dad and she says, “He adores me, he’s my biggest fan”. The scene moves on
to reflect the words she had just said with presents and cards “But somehow
he’s flawless in mine”. The song continues to play and then we see the female
running through a pathway that leads to a dead end with a light in the middle
shining: we’re too far down the hole”.
The next scene shows the girl wrapped around
herself with an ‘I LOVE NEW YORK’ top, “He has a hold on my soul”. The next
scene shows the girl doodling around a piece of paper with fast motion, this
signifies how foolishly in love she is. Her friends are at the door knocking
and she is till in the room crying for this guy. As she is still in there she
remembers their trip to New York with her guy, this will involve the green
screen.The next scene shows her
paper on the floor leading up to her, she has the bible in her hand seeking for
hope and understanding from her parents this symbolises the controversy within
Christian with a half and half screen mum and the female. The next scene shows
how her dad and her hold hands and then they suddenly let go to show, that her
dad is disappointed by her for choosing to this guy.” I know this wont make you
proud Papa, did I let you down? Are you ashamed of how your little girl turned
out?.
This scene show horror
as the female says “You see a monster” and straight away we see a flash of a
monstery image that is mysterious that enlarges for 3 seconds and then she says
but “I see a smile” and we show a smile of a guy and the guy says I Love you.
The camera then shakes and the girl is getting strangled by the guy. The girl
then finally texts someone we dont know how she texts because the text is
blurred and so is the recipent. The song that finally continues to play and the
music stops and the parents and the guy knock on the dooras they knock the door opens and they
find the girl dead with a syringe on the floor we then see the girls face for
the first time. The scene ends with the rose dropping to the floor in slow
motion.
We made a video that allowed us to see what out target audience really thought about Music Videos in general we asked two boys and one girl. We will use the information to construct our Music Video all the information here will try and append to ours
We have done research to find out how many times Rihanna's songs have been played this shows that Rihanna has been played from July to October. However here we can clearly see that the highest amount of plays is in early september because this is when rihanna's new song was released this means that Rihanna will get more plays when she releases a new album. Even though Rihanna gets more plays when she releases a new song, she still has a lot of fans listening to her music
According to some research i did on Music metric i found out Rihanna's Fans locations. Her biggest fan base is in the United states where she lives, then its Canada then the UK.From this research i found out that more people from The United States listen to Rihanna's music then other countries, so as a group we will try and cater to their needs.
So we are going to use American merchandise to attract the american audience such as a character wearing an I love New York top , we are also going to have english merchandise to also attract the english audience such as Big Ben green screen.
This graph shows that gender is massive part of Rihanna, we can see that Rihanna has more Female fans than Male Fans. This means that we should add more feminine stuff on our music video, this means that we can add like make up , clothes, shopping, hair products etc. Things that females would like to see on our video, even though there are still male fans it shows that we can add male parts but to a minimum. We could add things that females go through such as break ups and relationships probably this is how we can add the male parts to our video.
As shown below, within the social media networks Facebook has the most Rihanna fans. Twitter then follows Facebook in the rank. By looking at this information we can use it in our planning of the music video. Firstly we know that our target audience are Facebook, so it would be easy for us to relate to them since they are from our age group. This would also help us with the promotion of our music video because we know people we watch it because its one of Rihanna's songs. We would not try to promote our music video on twitter because we can see from the results that it does have as much viewers as Facebook.
As we can see through this graph that the amount of fans that Rihanna have varied from August from October. We can tell that fans have chosen their time to listen to Rihanna as we can see that in October the number of fans was over 800k, August ranged below 200k September lies in this category.
In October we know that Rihanna has released a new Single called Diamonds written by Sia who has been getting number 1 in the charts, we think that the reason behind Rihanna's number 1is the fact that Sia wrote the song.
We have also noticed that it depends when a song is released that allows fans to then listen to their song and keep tweeting, face-booking etc. Rihanna hasn't released a new single for her fans which keep her fans below 100k during August to September, we think she may have been on tour during this time.
As shown below we can see that Rihanna is nearest to the middle when it coms to web mentions. The screen shot shows the breakdown of the setiment of web mentions of Rihanna. At this point it shows that Rihanna is still getting positive mentions on the web. This is good for Rihanna because the public like and enjoy her music at the moment, which means an icrease in sales, in which sje has just released her latest album. Although the pointers on the positive side, it still shows shes not always getting good mentions. As a group we want to make a Rihanna music video, we feel this would help us with our plaaning, since we know the majority of the public are spreading good mentions. We can now use this information into to our planning by including more aspects that relate to Rihanna.
We have done research to see where Rihanna ranks in artist and it shows that Rihanna ranks at number 10 in the most successful artist. this shows that Rihanna is the tenth most successful artist which has grown from yesterday when she was 17th. this shows that because she is successful, we need to make the music video up to a good standard so that Rihanna can go up for number 10 to number 1. We have also noticed that recently Rihanna is 7th worldwide. This also means that it is easier for people to recognise her globally; She is a guaranteed money maker production companies would be lucky to have her signed because she is a like a safe product, there are no limits as to what you can do with her.
Before making the music video for Rihanna, we have done some research to see what the age distribution for Rihanna is. In the research, we found out that most of Rihanna's fans are between the ages of 18 and 24 with 18.13% of them male and 41.94% of them female. This shows that most of her fans are females age 18-24 mainly age 21 which means that we have to make sure that our music video is aimed to this age group and gender. This age also falls into our age group which is convenient because we know our age group more than anyone else which means that we would know more than anybody what to put in the music video.
Below is a screen shot of our group survey link on Facebook. We chose to put the link on Facebook because we know that our target audience uses it. Our target audience is based on our age groups, this makes it easier for is to relate to the. We hope by putting our survey link on Facebook, we would get as much response. In addition, we hope in future time to post our music video on Facebook so we can get as many views and feed back as we can.
The screen shots below are of the survey we made on survey monkey. We included ten questions which is mainly based about music videos. We hope by creating a questionnaire will help us to get good responses which we hope to use those responses as ideas for the making of our music video.
Controversy is all about image verses video. In some cases we would see that controversial videos would sell a lot or records, for example Lady Gaga. The issue on controversy has been around since the 1920s and has caused many problems in the music industry. Over the past decades, there has been issues with different music videos. From the soundies to the scopitones, to the promo music videos to glam rock, to hip-hop, rap to now.
Controversy can either occur either in artist image or in their music videos. Examples of controversy in an artist image is lady gaga. Artists tend to bring controversy in their image to bring peoples attention to them. Over the past decades various of artist have tried to portray their image in a certain way to make people judge them in different ways. Many artist do this to get a reaction. Lady gaga and Queen were examples of controversial artists.
Lady Gaga is an example of an artists who uses controversy in their image. She creats controvasy by the way she dresses, behaves and performs in public. She wears weird outfits in public to create the controversal idea. By her doing this, she is getting a lot of attention from the public. Creating a contraversal image makes people not forget them, which makes Lady gaga popular because people would not be able to forget her.
Another way controversy can been seen, is in artists music videos. There are vvarious of artists who create a controversy issue in there video. Artists normally do this, to get a reaction from the audience, it is part of a promotion process.
An example of this can be seen in Kanye West 'Power' music video. When this video was released there was a lot of views of the video. People were not happy in some ways because of some activities taken place in the music video. In the video Kanye is seen practising some satanic activities, which brings a whole controversal issue. Another one is that in some parts he tries to put himself as Jesus. By making this video, people up to today have bnot forgotten the music video. Although it went both ways that people hated it and judged him, but others took an interest of buying the album. When it comes to controversy, Artists take a ris which in some ways helps them get a reaction.
Hip hop is a music genre, Hip hop was a phrase that Mc's used on the mic it was created by Grandmaster flash and Furious five. Hip hop was formed in the 1970's and became very popular in New york city especially amongst African American and Latino's.Old school hip hop was made of simple rhythms and was more about having a good time , partying even though life was full of struggles such as Racism , no jobs , No welfare ect. Old school Hip hop usually had a positive message to life and the videos motivated people to strive for the best despite the struggle they were living in.
Doo Doo Brown
Hip Hop turned into rap 1990
Hip Hop has changed over the years , the video's of today portray a different message to the videos in the past they portray a more violence ,women are seen as sexual objects , drug life , thug life , vulgar language and materialism.
These videos show people fighting ,shooting killing, stabbing , holding guns and referring to it as a positive lifestyle in their raps.Women are exposed , half naked and are used as an accessory throughout the video. They also used a lot of harmful drugs to promote and show off e.g. smoking a cigarette or rolling up weed, they have also increased in swearing most videos always have at least 5 words of swearing. The videos also portray a lot of materliasim where it seems you need to have certain things to fit into the group which would be called (clique) things such as cars, women, clothes , jewellery and MONEY(Gambling).
The dance moves in Hip hop videos today are very sexual and arousing, whereas in the past dancing was more about feeling the beat and the rhythm of the music and now its more about bumping and grinding and pop lock and dropping.

MTV first launched on the 1st of August 1981, from its base in New York. It started as a music video channel that was guided by a host called Video Jockeys. The founder of MTV Robert W. Pittman, now the President and Chief of MTV Networks, in the 70s Pittman had tested the music format by hosting and producing on a show on WNBC. MTV is the largest TV Network in the world, which holds over 75 MTV channels.
MTV not only has over 75 channels, they also synergised to have Nickelodeon and Comedy Central and BET.
When MTV first aired on TV, they played an footage of the first space shuttle launch countdown of Columbia which took place earlier in the year that MTV aired and the launch of Apollo 11. Within months, record stores started to sell music that were MTV before they were put on radio
The first music video that was played on MTV on the day of the release was 'Video killed the Radio star' by the buggles. Here is the video of the song that was released on it's first day.
During the 1970s, the controversy of homosexuality came to light. Certain artist was making music videos including some sort of homosexual activity.
This could be that a man is dressed as women, sexual activities taking place, nudity etc. In continuation glam rock started to spread, this was a style of rock and pop which developed in the UK, which was performed by singers and musicians who wore outrageous clothes, makeup and hairstyles. Such artist were; Queen, Mac Bolan, David Bowie etc. In continuation, promotional videos were still continuing to grow.
In continuation, during the 1970s the style of glam rock was seemed controversal to some audieneces. This was the issue of artist dressing and behaving in a certain way in their music videos. This controversy, as mentioned before, was homosexuality. An example of a controversal video is David Bowie's Life on Mars video.
This music video is seemed to be controversal because in the music video, David Bowie is dressed in a light blue suit with heavy make-up and hair style. It almost makes him look like a female. People would have found this disturbing because he was a man and the fact he wanted to almost to be portrsayed as a women was a weird behaviour. Although people would have found he music video controversal, the song itself would have sold a lot of copies. This is because when people see something controversal, they hardly forget that moment. Well as watching a music video that is normal and not controversal will be easily forgotten.
Even throughout the music video David Bowie is just standing in one space and singing, the rememberal part is what he is wearing and how he looks like. In general David Bowie would of liked the idea of cotrovesy issues accuring about hes videos.
The sixties was an incredible , exciting , inventive and vibrant time. The 60s allowed people to march into the new decade with more enthusiasm, hope and self belief. The 60s moved In the 1960s the hippies, undertook the largest experiment with drug use in the history of mankind. It was an act that made people trust their fellow friend and also give them a chance to get high and have a new experience. It was freedom, rebellion, it was cool. The Beatles were introduced to drugs to allow them to get through long nights performing in drunken clubs.
During this time, Promotional music videos start to come to life. This was when music videos where made after a song was made, so the music video would come out at least six months or more after the single was released. Promotional music videos were not made for every single on an album, this would save money. The main reason for promotion music videos was for an artist to keep their fans and supporters close to them. E.g. when an artist goes on tour, the music video will come out then, so the fans wouldn’t forget about the particular songs.
During the 190s, scopitones were very popular in the music industry at that time. Scopitones were usual in bars. Scopitones is like a type of Jukbox. At that time it was a name for music videos and were invented by the french.
Scopitones were very sexual. Women would be seen with hadly clothes on. A lot of cleveage would be exposed. This often brought controversy to different people.
An example of a scopitone that demontrated what they were all about during the 1950s, is 'Feminity' by Donna Theodore, this scopitone was made in 1958.
Her song Feminity talks about how she does not like how men look at her as a sexual object. She sings about how she wants a family and a proper husband that will take care of her. But she complaind how she cant have that while she is treaed and looked at as a sexual object. In the scopitone Donna is seen at the beginging with clothes on singin' Why cant she be the women that she wants to be?' As the song goes on she is then later seen wearing a bekini with three men surrounding her. They all touch her body ilostration the song. Throughout the song she talks about feminity, how she really wants it. Also throughout the scpitone she is seen with men either dancing around her or holding her. This scopitone clearly demonstrates the controversal issue of scopitones being sexual. This could have been a strategy for peope (men), to buy the song. Lastly at towards the end of the scopiton, Donna states there is no point of feminity , that there is no point of having the family and he husbant, because she will be always portraed or looked at as a sexual object. Scopitones like this would have brought controversy of sexuality of women and also the whole issue of men dancing around them. They would have sold a ot bcause tose scopitones wouldnt have ben forgotten.
Soundies were the first music videos that were created in the 1920's and 1930's and they lasted for 3 minutes. These videos often had short dance sequences included in them . They were usually used to entertain people while they were wainting for films to show in th cinema. they were also played on the panoram which were coin operated jukebox that showed in nightclubs, amusement parks etc. The soundies music videos were experimented in silent movies with soundtracks and they were often used in musical or comedy films.
Here is an example of a soundie music video. This video was controversial when it came out because in those days, black cinemas and white cinemas were separate and this video was played in both cinemas which the whites didn't like in those days because it was a black artist singing. it was also controversial because the way that the woman are dressed in the video are shown as sexual so is their dancing.
We are Publicist for Media Companies as one of the top Publicists around worldwide, we have been asked to create a Music Video for an artist of our choice, which will then help to recreate their image e.g. personality, lifestyle, culture, community work, role model to the public. As we are creating an image for the artist whilst doing this, we will have to undertake some various tasks these tasks include creating a video , CD Disk cover and finally creating a Website for them. Considering all these factors we will then need to include the basics of the blog which will need some planning, construction and evaluation. To sum up we hope that we can re brand this artist so the public can see another side to the artist.
