Planning - Controversy
Controversy is all about image verses video. In some cases we would see that controversial videos would sell a lot or records, for example Lady Gaga. The issue on controversy has been around since the 1920s and has caused many problems in the music industry. Over the past decades, there has been issues with different music videos. From the soundies to the scopitones, to the promo music videos to glam rock, to hip-hop, rap to now.
Controversy can either occur either in artist image or in their music videos. Examples of controversy in an artist image is lady gaga. Artists tend to bring controversy in their image to bring peoples attention to them. Over the past decades various of artist have tried to portray their image in a certain way to make people judge them in different ways. Many artist do this to get a reaction. Lady gaga and Queen were examples of controversial artists.

Lady Gaga is an example of an artists who uses controversy in their image. She creats controvasy by the way she dresses, behaves and performs in public. She wears weird outfits in public to create the controversal idea. By her doing this, she is getting a lot of attention from the public. Creating a contraversal image makes people not forget them, which makes Lady gaga popular because people would not be able to forget her.
Another way controversy can been seen, is in artists music videos. There are vvarious of artists who create a controversy issue in there video. Artists normally do this, to get a reaction from the audience, it is part of a promotion process.
An example of this can be seen in Kanye West 'Power' music video. When this video was released there was a lot of views of the video. People were not happy in some ways because of some activities taken place in the music video. In the video Kanye is seen practising some satanic activities, which brings a whole controversal issue. Another one is that in some parts he tries to put himself as Jesus. By making this video, people up to today have bnot forgotten the music video. Although it went both ways that people hated it and judged him, but others took an interest of buying the album. When it comes to controversy, Artists take a ris which in some ways helps them get a reaction.
Planning - Hip-Hop
Early Hip Hop Vs Late Hip Hop
Hip hop is a music genre, Hip hop was a phrase that Mc's used on the mic it was created by Grandmaster flash and Furious five. Hip hop was formed in the 1970's and became very popular in New york city especially amongst African American and Latino's.Old school hip hop was made of simple rhythms and was more about having a good time , partying even though life was full of struggles such as Racism , no jobs , No welfare ect. Old school Hip hop usually had a positive message to life and the videos motivated people to strive for the best despite the struggle they were living in.

Hip Hop turned into rap 1990
Hip Hop has changed over the years , the video's of today portray a different message to the videos in the past they portray a more violence ,women are seen as sexual objects , drug life , thug life , vulgar language and materialism.
These videos show people fighting ,shooting killing, stabbing , holding guns and referring to it as a positive lifestyle in their raps.Women are exposed , half naked and are used as an accessory throughout the video. They also used a lot of harmful drugs to promote and show off e.g. smoking a cigarette or rolling up weed, they have also increased in swearing most videos always have at least 5 words of swearing. The videos also portray a lot of materliasim where it seems you need to have certain things to fit into the group which would be called (clique) things such as cars, women, clothes , jewellery and MONEY(Gambling).
The dance moves in Hip hop videos today are very sexual and arousing, whereas in the past dancing was more about feeling the beat and the rhythm of the music and now its more about bumping and grinding and pop lock and dropping.

Planning - MTV
MTV
August 1, 1981
MTV first launched on the 1st of August 1981, from its base in New York. It started as a music video channel that was guided by a host called Video Jockeys. The founder of MTV Robert W. Pittman, now the President and Chief of MTV Networks, in the 70s Pittman had tested the music format by hosting and producing on a show on WNBC. MTV is the largest TV Network in the world, which holds over 75 MTV channels.
MTV not only has over 75 channels, they also synergised to have Nickelodeon and Comedy Central and BET.
When MTV first aired on TV, they played an footage of the first space shuttle launch countdown of Columbia which took place earlier in the year that MTV aired and the launch of Apollo 11. Within months, record stores started to sell music that were MTV before they were put on radio
The first music video that was played on MTV on the day of the release was 'Video killed the Radio star' by the buggles. Here is the video of the song that was released on it's first day.
Planning - 70s Glam Rock
During the 1970s, the controversy of homosexuality came to light. Certain artist was making music videos including some sort of homosexual activity.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoQLTLpykCHn81SS4MFbFp3sp9SZF5vq0DuJHyQUhyphenhyphenCeRdX6gKTWKBo0WgfCkY3Hf8kW0K6kualjvTvUskAfBBDCkqCGBvJjR3UQu9BpefplX_juKGsjQnncDg4IOwzpr6ttHkXIY7k3nX/s1600/david+bowie.jpg)
In continuation, during the 1970s the style of glam rock was seemed controversal to some audieneces. This was the issue of artist dressing and behaving in a certain way in their music videos. This controversy, as mentioned before, was homosexuality. An example of a controversal video is David Bowie's Life on Mars video.
This music video is seemed to be controversal because in the music video, David Bowie is dressed in a light blue suit with heavy make-up and hair style. It almost makes him look like a female. People would have found this disturbing because he was a man and the fact he wanted to almost to be portrsayed as a women was a weird behaviour. Although people would have found he music video controversal, the song itself would have sold a lot of copies. This is because when people see something controversal, they hardly forget that moment. Well as watching a music video that is normal and not controversal will be easily forgotten.
Even throughout the music video David Bowie is just standing in one space and singing, the rememberal part is what he is wearing and how he looks like. In general David Bowie would of liked the idea of cotrovesy issues accuring about hes videos.
Planning - Promo video
1960s
The sixties was an incredible , exciting , inventive and vibrant time. The 60s allowed people to march into the new decade with more enthusiasm, hope and self belief. The 60s moved
In the 1960s the hippies, undertook the largest experiment with drug use in the history of mankind. It was an act that made people trust their fellow friend and also give them a chance to get high and have a new experience. It was freedom, rebellion, it was cool. The Beatles were introduced to drugs to allow them to get through long nights performing in drunken clubs.
During this time, Promotional music videos start to come to life. This was when music videos where made after a song was made, so the music video would come out at least six months or more after the single was released. Promotional music videos were not made for every single on an album, this would save money. The main reason for promotion music videos was for an artist to keep their fans and supporters close to them. E.g. when an artist goes on tour, the music video will come out then, so the fans wouldn’t forget about the particular songs.
Planning - Scopitones
During the 190s, scopitones were very popular in the music industry at that time. Scopitones were usual in bars. Scopitones is like a type of Jukbox. At that time it was a name for music videos and were invented by the french.
An example of a scopitone that demontrated what they were all about during the 1950s, is 'Feminity' by Donna Theodore, this scopitone was made in 1958.
Her song Feminity talks about how she does not like how men look at her as a sexual object. She sings about how she wants a family and a proper husband that will take care of her. But she complaind how she cant have that while she is treaed and looked at as a sexual object. In the scopitone Donna is seen at the beginging with clothes on singin' Why cant she be the women that she wants to be?' As the song goes on she is then later seen wearing a bekini with three men surrounding her. They all touch her body ilostration the song. Throughout the song she talks about feminity, how she really wants it. Also throughout the scpitone she is seen with men either dancing around her or holding her. This scopitone clearly demonstrates the controversal issue of scopitones being sexual. This could have been a strategy for peope (men), to buy the song. Lastly at towards the end of the scopiton, Donna states there is no point of feminity , that there is no point of having the family and he husbant, because she will be always portraed or looked at as a sexual object. Scopitones like this would have brought controversy of sexuality of women and also the whole issue of men dancing around them. They would have sold a ot bcause tose scopitones wouldnt have ben forgotten.
Planning - Soundies

Here is an example of a soundie music video. This video was controversial when it came out because in those days, black cinemas and white cinemas were separate and this video was played in both cinemas which the whites didn't like in those days because it was a black artist singing. it was also controversial because the way that the woman are dressed in the video are shown as sexual so is their dancing.

Planning - Description of Brief
We are Publicist for Media Companies as one of the top Publicists around worldwide, we have been asked to create a Music Video for an artist of our choice, which will then help to recreate their image e.g. personality, lifestyle, culture, community work, role model to the public. As we are creating an image for the artist whilst doing this, we will have to undertake some various tasks these tasks include creating a video , CD Disk cover and finally creating a Website for them. Considering all these factors we will then need to include the basics of the blog which will need some planning, construction and evaluation. To sum up we hope that we can re brand this artist so the public can see another side to the artist.
